Edwin Lagunas, 18, has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and an additional count of aggravated battery with a firearm stemming from the Nov. 20 shooting that left Ruby Navarrete and Lynner Hawkins dead.

Cook County prosecutors said that shooting occurred during a party at a garage that had been converted into an illegal bar in the 5800 block of West Augusta Boulevard.

At around 11:30 p.m., security at the party was escorting out a man who had been “disrespectful,” but that person refused to leave peacefully and a physical altercation broke out, prosecutors said.

Lagunas was also attending this party and knew the man being escorted out, prosecutors said, and during the physical altercation he and a third man were heard saying they needed to go to their vehicle

The pair ran from the area, but returned a short time later in a black sedan. Lagunas exited that vehicle carrying a firearm with an extended magazine and began yelling before firing into the party, prosecutors said.

Navarrete, who had been attending the party, was struck in the head. Hawkins, who was working security, was struck in the chest, while another security guard was also struck in his leg and hand.

Both Navarrete and Hawkins were taken to Stroger Hospital where they each died, prosecutors said. The third victim was hospitalized for five days and was eventually discharged.

Someone from inside the party returned fire at Lagunas, though prosecutors said the victims had been struck and were seen laying on the ground before that person began shooting.

Phone records placed Lagunas at the scene of the shooting at the time it occurred and showed him leaving the scene shortly after, prosecutors said. He was eventually arrested Saturday, and allegedly admitted that he had fired into the party.

Prosecutors said Lagunas also admitted to a witness that he was responsible for the shooting, prior to his arrest. During Monday’s hearing, Lagunas’ public defender said her client suffers from some mental health issues and asked that he be granted an order allowing him to take medications.

He is due back in court for a hearing Dec. 30.
