Chicago police announced the student has been charged with felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon and threat to a school building. He was also cited for possessing a high-capacity magazine and metal piercing bullets.

According to police, the student — whose name was not released because he is a minor — was arrested Wednesday at Mary E. Courtenay Language Arts Center, 4420 N. Beacon St., after he was reported to staff in the building.

In a letter to parents, school officials said they were made aware of the situation Wednesday morning and immediately contacted both the Chicago Public Schools’ Office of Safety and Security and the Chicago Police Department.

Officers responded to the building and took possession of an unloaded gun. No students or staff were injured.

The school will be adding additional security measures for the rest of the week out of an “abundance of caution.”

“We take student safety extremely seriously,” school officials said in their letter. “If your child voices any concerns or fears about today’s incident, please reach out to us. We will be available to help any students who need extra support. If you are ever made aware of a potentially dangerous object in our building, please alert us immediately so we can ensure everyone’s safety.”
