Week in Review: Downtown Chaos; Johnson Taps Transition Team

There’s a new plan in place to thwart the chaos in Loop that was seen last weekend. Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s interim police superintendent, Eric Carter, announces he’s retiring after the mayor privately slams his department’s response to the downtown violence. Meanwhile, Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson taps a City Hall lifer, the Office of Emergency Management director, as his chief of staff.

After kudos from his colleagues, embattled and indicted Ald. Ed Burke says goodbye to City Council after 54 years. But Lightfoot stays mum at her last meeting. More than a dozen alderpeople say so long to City Council.

In other news, Johnson woos lawmakers in Springfield as the legislature weighs a Bears surcharge to tickets if they move to Arlington Heights to help pay Soldier Field debt. And the jury will decide the fate of the “ComEd Four” next week.

In sports, the Cubs are hot, and the Sox are disappointing with no back-to-back wins this season. One bright spot: Their closer, Liam Hendricks, reports he is cancer free.
