A 21-year-old woman was killed in a mass shooting that left eight other women injured Sunday morning in the North Lawndale neighborhood.
According to Chicago Police Department data, five people were killed by gunfire over the weekend. In all, 47 people were shot in 29 separate shooting incidents across the city between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
The mass shooting occurred just before 1 a.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of South Keeler Avenue. According to police, a group of women were at a gathering in that area when a black Jeep approached and multiple people exited with guns and began shooting towards the group, striking nine women.
A 21-year-old woman was struck in the face and killed. A 28-year-old woman was struck eight times and was hospitalized in critical condition, while seven other victims between the ages of 20 and 33 were also wounded and hospitalized in good condition.
“Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the victim who was killed,” the CPD said in a statement Sunday. “We are also walking alongside those injured in this shooting and those who were present and witnessed this reprehensible act of violence.”
No one is in custody, but Interim Police Superintendent Fred Waller said detectives are “working hard to identify and apprehend the people responsible for this shooting.”
Chicago police officials announced they’ve opened an assistance center for victims, as well as their family, friends and others affected by gun violence over the weekend. That center — which will offer counseling and safe spaces — is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Deliverance Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith, 1457 S. Komensky Ave.
“This is about relationship building,” Aileen Robinson, CPD’s assistant director of Crime Victim Services, said during a press conference Monday. “By bringing in immediate crisis services (after a crime), we’re kind of picking up where things were left off and building a relationship. And the hope is that building the relationship and attending to what that victim needs first, that they will also be willing to work with us.”

Also over the weekend, a 61-year-old man was killed following a physical altercation with another person at around 10:15 p.m. Friday in the 2600 block of West Luther Street. Police said both parties produced firearms before the victim was shot once in the head. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A 28-year-old man died and two others were injured in a shooting at 8 p.m. Saturday in the 7600 block of South Peoria Street. The man was shot in the face and died of his injuries. An 18-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman who were also in the area were also struck and hospitalized.
A man and woman walking in the 1300 block of West Devon Avenue were each shot just before 2 a.m. Sunday. The man, 30, was struck 10 times and later died at a local hospital, while the woman, 20, was struck once in the leg and was hospitalized in good condition.
Two people were shot, one fatally, just before 5 p.m. Sunday in the 6400 block of South Albany Avenue. Police said the pair were hanging out on a corner when a gray Toyota drove by and a verbal altercation ensued between someone inside and a 41-year-old man outside. The person in the vehicle then produced a firearm and shot the man and a 66-year-old woman. The man was struck in the chest and died, while the woman was hospitalized in good condition.
Police said the woman was not the intended target.
