‘Somos Un Solo Pueblo, Mexico y Puerto Rico’ Creates Cultural Connections Aug. 26

A first-ever concert will bring the musical traditions of Chicago’s two largest Latino communities together at Millennium Park.

On Aug. 26, the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance will present “Somos Un Solo Pueblo, Mexico y Puerto Rico,” a cross-cultural repertoire of Mexican and Puerto Rican music and performance. It’s a part of the inaugural Millennium Park Residency program, as well as a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance’s founding by Carlos Hernandez.

“Instead of putting together one major event, what we’ve done is we created a series of activities throughout the years that are more robust,” Hernandez said. “We are now celebrating ‘Somos Un Solo Pueblo, Mexico y Puerto Rico’ to bring two communities together, the Mexican and the Puerto Rican community. We are the largest Latino communities in Chicago.”

The concert will feature Puerto Rican conductor Roselin Pabón and Mexican conductor Sergio Cárdenas with the Chicago Philharmonic, as well as artists from both Puerto Rico and Mexico performing traditional music. Local artists performing will include PRAA’s Latin Music Project Youth Ensemble, the Mexican Folkloric Ballet, AfriCaribe, and Cuerdas Clásicas.

“We have an artistic beauty in our cultures. We have beautiful music. I want people to feel proud,” Hernandez said of the program. “I want people to hunger for more of this. I want people to have a great time and say this was a spectacular event that should happen more often.”

“Somos Un Solo Pueblo, Mexico y Puerto Rico” will take place at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion on Saturday, Aug. 26 from 6-8 p.m. The concert is free to attend.
