Armchair meteorologists take note: Professional forecasters predicted two rounds of storms between Monday and Tuesday, said snow totals would vary widely, and pegged the start of the second round to hit Chicago late Tuesday afternoon/early evening.
And that’s pretty much how the weather has played out.
The one-two punch of storm systems mostly produced rain in the city and areas along Lake Michigan until it turned to snow Tuesday afternoon, just in advance of the evening commute.
The preliminary total of 1.1 inches of snow recorded at O’Hare Airport, Chicago’s official weather site, looked likely to increase as the day progressed.
The second of two rounds of storms was also expected to dump significant amounts of snow in the northwest portions of the greater metro area Tuesday afternoon and early evening, according to the weather service.
Even though the flakes are still falling, the National Weather Service is already turning its attention to a storm system that looks poised to arrive Friday night.
And an even bigger weather story is the deep freeze heading to region next week, with wind chills of 20 degrees below zero possible.
