The Chicago Red Stars announced Tuesday the team has signed forward Mallory Swanson to a historic long-term contract, making her the highest-paid player in the National Women’s Soccer League.
The Colorado native has signed with the Red Stars through 2028. The contract is worth $2 million on a four-year deal with a fifth-year option, according to reports.
“I am excited to be back with the Red Stars! These last few years have been such a blessing in Chicago, even with the ups and downs, and I can’t wait to be back,” Swanson said in a statement. “I am looking forward to getting to work and helping the team win championships.”
Swanson joined the Red Stars in 2021 from the Sky Blue FC, or what’s now New Jersey/New York Gotham FC. She has since led the Red Stars in goals and assists, with 18 goals and 10 assists. Swanson has made 51 appearances with 47 starts across all competitions with the Red Stars.
Swanson has also played on an international level after joining the United States Women’s National Team at 17 years old, and then winning the Women’s World Cup in 2019.
The contract surpasses a record deal signed last month by forward Maria Sanchez with the Houston Dash, worth over $1.5 million over three years.
The NWSL 2024 season begins March 16.
Mallory Swanson joins her husband, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, in committing to the city for the next few years. He signed a seven-year contract with the team last year.
