Second Installment of 2022 Cook County Property Tax Bills Will Be Months Late, Again

Cook County property owners are set to get a four-month reprieve on their property tax bills, as delays that began more than a year ago have yet to be resolved.

The bills are expected to be available Nov. 1 — and due Dec. 1, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said.

That means the second-installment of property owners’ 2022 tax bills will be more than 120 days late amid months of bureaucratic wrangling and finger pointing among Cook County officials. In a typical year, this bill is due Aug. 1.

“The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with a critical overhaul of the technological backbone of the system, has had a dramatic impact on the County’s property tax processes and timelines,” Preckwinkle said in a statement.

The first installment of 2022 property taxes were due April 3.

The second installment of 2021 property taxes were delayed by five months in 2022, records show.

Assessor Fritz Kaegi blamed the delay on the Cook County Board of Review for not helping upgrade the assessor’s computer system. But Board of Review Member Larry Rogers Jr. said Kaegi was at fault for not using the old system as well as the new system to avoid delays.

Many Chicago homeowners saw their property tax bills soar in 2021, after all properties were reassessed.

Among the hardest hit were residents of the Lower West Side community area, which includes Pilsen, whose residents saw their property taxes rise an average of 63%, according to Cook County data.
