Relieving Court Delays

After appealing to the Supreme Court for help, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle hopes the system is one step closer to resolving the massive backlog of Cook County criminal cases resulting in some inmates waiting years for their cases to be adjudicated.

Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride has summoned a meeting with President Preckwinkle and Circuit Court of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, Cook County Public Defender A.C. Cunningham, Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart, as well as Chief Judge Eric T. Washington from the District of Columbia’s Court of Appeals, to provide guidance in improving the criminal courts operations here.

Carol Marin and her guests take a closer look at the issue. Joining Carol are Juliana Stratton, Executive Director of Cook County Justice Advisory Council; Rob Wildeboer, criminal and legal affairs reporter for WBEZ Chicago Public Radio; Margaret Egan, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart's Director of Public Policy; and Ali Abid, staff attorney and criminal justice policy analyst for the Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice.
