Incumbent Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx came away the winner in Tuesday’s primary against three Democratic challengers.

Her closest rival, Bill Conway, spent nearly $12 million to challenge Foxx with money given to him by his billionaire father, William Conway, who’s investment company became a controversial issue during the campaign. 

With 98% of the precincts reporting, Foxx has 50.18% of the vote; Conway has 31.35%. Donna More, who ran for the office unsuccessfully in 2016, got 13.47% of the vote and former Ald. Bob Fioretti won only 5% of the vote Tuesday.

Foxx still faces the winner of the Republican primary, Pat O’Brien, in November. O’Brien has served as a Cook County Circuit Court judge, as chief deputy in the Cook County state’s attorney’s office and also as an assistant Illinois attorney general.

The office has been in Democratic control since 1996 when Dick Devine unseated the popular incumbent republican, Jack O’Malley. Foxx upset the two-term incumbent Democrat, Anita Alvarez in 2016.

Foxx will no doubt continue to face serious questions in the lead-up to November’s general election about her handling of the case involving actor Jussie Smollett.
