In her address to Chicagoans on Thursday evening, Mayor Lori Lightfoot didn’t shy away from hard truths facing the city as it copes with the COVID-19 crisis.
But she also implored residents to respond to each other with empathy and kindness.
“Chicago, we need to love each other with all our hearts, today and every day,” the mayor said.
The challenge of practicing self-distancing means “we need the warmth of smiles, hellos and thank-yous” more than ever, she added.
Vowing “we will get through this together,” Lightfoot closed her address by quoting from Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem “Paul Robeson”:

harvest:
we are each other’s
business:
we are each other’s
magnitude and bond.”
