The Week in Review: Illinois Begins Partially Reopening

Illinois partially reopens Friday as Chicago set its partial reopening for June 3. The city’s plan includes closing streets to cars.

Illinois surpasses 115,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases this week and more than 5,000 deaths as the national death toll surpasses the grim 100,000 death milestone. Meanwhile, Illinois is the only state to hit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s benchmarks for reopening.

Protests erupt in the wake George Floyd’s death and a CNN reporter, who graduated from Northwestern, is arrested while covering protests in Minneapolis. The officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck has been arrested and charged with murder.

Chicago gets a casino, a feat that neither Mayor Daley nor Mayor Emanuel could accomplish. And more Chicago police will be reassigned to patrol duty as Mayor Lori Lightfoot called her new top cop’s Memorial Day weekend plan a “fail” after 10 died over the weekend.
