From Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks to Marsha P. Johnson and Stacey Abrams, Black women continue to be key leaders in our communities. This Black History Month, WTTW News shined a light on Black women during its February community conversation.
On Monday, “Chicago Tonight: Black Voices” host and “Chicago Tonight” co-host Brandis Friedman moderated the conversation about Black women: their accomplishments and the adversities they continue to overcome.
She was joined by Felicia Davis, president and CEO of the Chicago Foundation for Women (@SouthSideGrl312); Michelle Duster, author, activist and great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells (@MichelleDuster); LaSaia Wade, founder and executive director of Brave Space Alliance (@LaSaiaWade); and Dorri McWhorter, CEO of the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago (@chicCPA).
During our conversation, guests touched on a range of topics, from sharing the names of Black female leaders they admired growing up and the significance of Vice President Kamala Harris’ role to stereotypes Black women face and how Black men can be better allies.
