Both the Chicago Fire Department and the police department’s Marine Unit responded to the scene shortly after 5 a.m.

The man was with a group of people at the harbor when he went into the water and failed to resurface. Spokespeople for both the fire and police departments were unable to say whether a life ring was present at the site, or whether it had been used. Lifeguards are present at Chicago beaches 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The man was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

According to statistics maintained by the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, prior to Wednesday’s incident, 33 people had died from drowning in Lake Michigan this year, and the outcome of five others is unknown. In 2021, 48 people drowned in Lake Michigan.

Officials in Indiana reported Wednesday that the body of an unidentified male was recovered from Lake Michigan Tuesday near Whiting Lakefront Park.

A park visitor alerted emergency responders after spotting a body approximately 200 yards from shore. The identity of the man hasn’t been made public pending the notification of family. A death investigation is underway.
