A 66-year-old man — identified through Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office records as Salim Khamo — was killed after he was shot once in the chest inside a store in the 6300 block of North Western Avenue.

According to police, a man rode a bike to the store at around 9:50 p.m. Monday night. He was armed with a handgun and demanded money from Khamo before shooting the clerk once in the chest.

Khamo was able to fire a shot back at the robber, police said, but did not strike him. The suspect then fled on his bike without taking anything from the store.

Khamo was taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition, but he later died of his injuries.

Police said there is no one currently in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.
