Chicago police are warning residents in multiple neighborhoods after dozens of armed robberies have been reported over the past week.

The Chicago Police Department on Monday evening issued a community alert notifying residents on the city’s North and West sides after at least 50 armed robberies have been carried out between Dec. 7 and Dec. 10.

Police said that in each incident, victims are either on foot or seated inside a vehicle when they’re approached by two-to-four armed males who demand the victims’ personal belongings. The offenders are believed to be Black, between the ages of 15 and 30 who wear dark clothing, hoodies, and black ski masks.

The CPD issued the community alert hours after multiple people were arrested following a fiery crash in Lincoln Square. In that incident, police said four men were inside a stolen Hyundai which was suspected to have been used in a previous armed robbery. That vehicle struck a Streets & Sanitation vehicle in the 5100 block of North Oakley Avenue at around 10:45 a.m. Monday and burst into flames.

No injuries were reported and four people believed to have been in that stolen vehicle were later located and taken into custody. Police said they recovered three firearms from inside that vehicle, but it’s not immediately clear if this incident is connected to any of the armed robberies referenced in the community alert.
