Some workers in Cook County will find a little more in their paychecks starting this month.

Beginning Saturday, Cook County’s minimum wage will be increasing to $13.70 per hour for non-tipped workers and $8 per hour for tipped workers. Also starting Saturday, minimum wage in Chicago is up to $15.80 per hour for companies with 21 or more workers, and $15 per hour for smaller businesses. For tipped workers in Chicago, the minimum wage is $9.48 per hour for companies with 21 or more workers, and $9 per hour for smaller companies.

“Every May into June, based on Cook County’s minimum wage ordinance, the updated minimum wages are calculated to evaluate if an increase will occur,” said Julia Epplin-Zapf, policy analyst with the Cook County Department of Human Rights and Ethics. “So this year because of the inflationary cap, the minimum wages for both rates did increase. We absolutely encourage everyone to check their next paycheck to ensure that the updated increased wages are reflected in your paycheck.”

Epplin-Zapf said if workers believe they have not had their wages adjusted, they should contact the Cook County Commission on Human Rights — and that goes for other workplace violations as well.

“We accept and investigate formal complaints: wages not representing correctly, the number of potential violations of the minimum wage ordinance, earned sick leave ordinance, or if you are discriminated against in your place of employment. … You can always file a complaint and you can file on your own or you can ask a supporting agency or attorney to support you in filing that complaint,” Epplin-Zapf said.
