An 9-year-old girl was fatally shot Saturday in the Portage Park neighborhood, one of seven people killed by gunfire over the weekend in Chicago.

According to Chicago Police Department figures, 27 people were shot in 25 separate shooting incidents between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday. That included the young girl who was fatally shot Saturday in the 3500 block of North Long Avenue.

According to police, the girl was outside with a group of people at around 9:40 p.m. when a man approached from across the street and shot her once in the head. Another man on the scene attempted to disarm the shooter, and during the struggle, the offender was shot in the face.

He was hospitalized in critical condition, while police said he’s been placed into custody and charges are pending. The girl was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, neighbors said the man who shot the girl had previously complained about her being too loud.

A 20-year-old man was killed and a second person was injured in a shooting just after midnight Sunday morning in the 10400 block of South Avenue N. Officers responding to a report of shots fired in the area found the victims, who had been shot by an unknown offender, in a residential yard. The 20-year-old died of his injuries, while an 18-year-old man was hospitalized in good condition.

At around that same time, a 19-year-old man was killed inside an apartment complex in the 2900 block of South State Street. He had been in a verbal altercation with someone before being shot in the face.

A man was fatally shot in the 12100 block of South Ashland Avenue at around 2 a.m. Sunday. Police did not release the victim’s age, but said he’d been found in the back yard of a residence with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

A 52-year-old man was killed in the 7100 block of South May Street after being shot in the head just after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Minutes later, at around 1:15 p.m., a 35-year-old man was fatally shot in the 6600 block of South Hartwell Avenue. He was inside a home in that area when he was shot in the chest and pronounced dead on scene.
