House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing serious challenges from members of his own party in the U.S. House of Representatives after preventing a government shutdown through a stopgap measure.

Former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh, a Republican, says the battle is an example of where the national Republican Party is right now.    

Walsh expressed confidence that McCarthy’s leadership isn’t in jeopardy.

“Kevin McCarthy is fortunate in that Florida Representative Matt Gaetz doesn’t have any friends. He’s alone. A number of the hard-liners in the House today said now’s not a good time to get rid of McCarthy,” Walsh said Monday evening before Gaetz made formal moves to oust McCarthy.

Walsh also said he believes the Biden impeachment inquiry is bogus.

“Republicans promised us two years ago that if they were given control of Congress that it was going to be two years of retribution for how they think Donald Trump was treated,” Walsh said. “They still want that because that’s what their base wants, even if there’s no basis to it.”

Walsh thinks the fraud trial of former President Donald Trump, which began Monday, will only serve to help Trump’s election efforts.

“It’s all gold for Donald Trump. All of his criminal troubles and trials only strengthen his support within the party,” Walsh said. “Trump supporters still firmly believe that this thing called the deep state is after him. What he’s going through is a badge of honor for him. He’s going to be the Republican presidential nominee. That was never in doubt.”
