Anthony Mothershed, of Aurora, has been arrested and charged with counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, months after the deadly shooting at an outdoor gathering during the Juneteenth holiday weekend.

A DuPage County judge ordered Mothershed to be detained while awaiting trial during a hearing Friday.

“The violent conduct alleged against Mr. Mothershed is outrageous and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement Friday. “A gathering of hundreds of people is no place for illegal guns, and my office stands ready to file the appropriate charges supported by evidence against anyone accused of behavior such as alleged in this case.”

Gunfire broke out shortly after midnight on June 18 in a strip mall parking lot, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Reginald Meadows, a 31-year-old man from Willowbrook, was fatally struck, while nearly two dozen others were wounded by gunfire.

According to prosecutors, Mothershed was standing with a group of people outside the nearby Legacy Beauty Supply when he began shooting a .45 caliber handgun toward the celebration.

He then allegedly fled the scene, and was eventually arrested without incident Wednesday.

After the shooting, the Sheriff’s Office stated that multiple rounds had been fired from multiple weapons. Mothershed has not been charged with Meadows’ murder and the investigation remains ongoing.

“The investigation into what turned a peaceful celebration into a deadly shooting continues to be extremely tedious and time-consuming,” Berlin said.

Mothershed is due back in court for a hearing Oct. 23.
