Chicago police fatally shot a man after he allegedly wounded an officer during an attempted investigatory stop in the South Shore neighborhood Monday morning.
According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department, the shooting occurred just before noon in the 7300 block of South Dante Avenue.
Four uniformed members of a district tactical team had attempted to stop a man, but as they approached, he began to flee on foot and fired shots at police, according to the statement. Officers returned fire, striking the man.
He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. One officer was struck in the arm and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second officer was also taken to a hospital for observation.
“Clearly they’re shaken,” Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said Monday afternoon. “This is a very troubling situation. Anytime something like this happens — there’s an officer involved shooting — our officers are shaken, but they’re OK for now.”
Police recovered a firearm at the scene.
All involved officers will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
According to the CPD, its Investigative Response Team was at the scene investigating Monday, as was the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates all police use-of-force incidents.
