Two people were hospitalized in serious condition and multiple others were helped from the building, located in the 1000 block of West Foster, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

A “heavy fire” was reported on the building’s sixth floor after 8 a.m. The fire department said it located “people at windows looking to get out,” stating that ladders were raised to assist in the rescue as firefighters reached the sixth floor.

The fire began on the sixth floor, but it spread to the seventh floor of the building as well before it was was extinguished by 9 a.m.. According to the fire department’s social media, two people were taken to the hospital, and four others refused medical treatment.

CFD spokesperson Kelly Burns said the building has more than 200 units inside, and building management has been able to place residents whose homes were affected by the fire into other vacant units temporarily.

Burns described this as a “tough fire,” and said there was a “tremendous amount of smoke” in the building hallways.

This is a developing story.
