Two teen boys were fatally shot as they left their high school Friday afternoon in the Loop.

According to Chicago police, the boys — ages 16 and 17 — were Innovations High School students and were killed just before 12:30 p.m. near Millennium Park.

“I’d like to offer our condolences on behalf of Superintendent (Larry) Snelling and the Chicago Police Department to the two families that were touched by this senseless act of violence today,” CPD Deputy Chief Jon Hein said.

According to Hein, several students were exiting Innovations, a charter high school located at 17 N. State St., around 12:25 p.m. when two vehicles pulled up and a group of people got out and began firing shots. The two victims were struck and rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

A woman walking in the area also suffered a graze wound, but declined medial attention.

Hein said police are searching for an SUV and dark-colored sedan in connection with the shooting.

Police believe this was an isolated incident and there is no additional danger in the area. While the police investigation was underway, the CTA rerouted buses from the area and had trains bypassing the Washington/Wabash stop.

“I extend my deepest condolences to (the victims’) families and the Innovations High School community as they grapple with unimaginable pain and trauma caused by this senseless act of violence,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement Friday.
