Early voting officially kicked off Thursday and was paused a day later after an appellate court ruled Friday that Democrat Ashonta Rice, who was running for Cook County circuit court judge, be removed from the ballot.

The Chicago Board of Elections offices on the sixth floor of 69 W. Washington St. and its Loop Supersite at 191 N. Clark St. will reopen for early voting on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The board had to reprogram and proof the ballots for all early voting touchscreen machines to reflect the change, according to a press release.

Rice was removed from the ballot Jan. 30, according to Illinois State Board of Elections records, but Friday’s court action made that final. Rice’s removal leaves one candidate for the position: James Murphy-Aguilu, who was appointed to a circuit court judge position in July.

According to Chicago Board of Elections data, 314 people cast their ballots in the less than 48 hours early voting became available in the city. Fifty vote-by-mail ballots were returned.

Voters who chose Rice won’t be tallied unless the Illinois Supreme Court says otherwise, elections board spokesman Max Bever said.

Democratic vote-by-mail ballots for the Illinois primary election have not yet been mailed to Chicago voters, election officials say, adding that ballots are being reprinted and will be mailed as soon as possible.

Election Day for the Illinois primary is March 19.
