Murder charges have been filed against a pair of teen boys who are accused of killing a 16-year-old Senn High School student and wounding two others just blocks from the campus last month.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that Kashawn Perdue, 17, and a 14-year-old juvenile boy have both been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder following the Jan. 31 killing of Daveon Gibson.

“We were committed to bringing justice in this case,” Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said during a news conference. “We did this for the two surviving victims and the family of the teen who lost his life.”

Perdue has been charged as an adult and was ordered to be detained pending trial during a hearing Wednesday. The 14-year-old, whose name has been withheld because he has been charged as a juvenile, also faces two counts of aggravated battery.

The students, who were all 15 or 16 years old, were walking in the 1200 block of West Thorndale Avenue just after 3:30 p.m. Jan. 31.

Perdue and the 14-year-old are students at Uplift Community High School, but were not in attendance the day of the shooting, according to a proffer presented by Cook County prosecutors in court Wednesday.

The pair were allegedly driving a stolen vehicle near Senn and pulled into the mouth of the alley on Thorndale, cutting off the path of the victims as they walked from their school.

The 14-year-old then exited a passenger door and fired at least 15 .38 caliber rounds at the victims, according to the proffer.

Daveon Gibson, 16, was struck in the chest and killed. The other two victims were also struck and hospitalized, but survived.

Prosecutors said the shooting was not captured on camera, but multiple witnesses heard the shots and saw a young man with a firearm who hopped back into the Honda.

Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti wouldn’t say whether the victims and alleged shooters knew each other, but said police believe there was an “altercation” between them that preceded the shooting.

Ursitti said investigators were able to identify the vehicle used in the shooting — a gray Honda HR-V with Florida plates that was been stolen on Jan. 29 — and where the driver fled following the incident.

After the shooting, Perdue and the 14-year-old were allegedly seen on video walking from the Honda and through neighborhood streets back to Uplift. Prosecutors said numerous Uplift staff members positively identified the pair from several surveillance video clips.

According to the proffer, Perdue admitted to investigators following his arrest that he’d been driving the stolen Honda before and after the shooting and identified the 14-year-old as the shooter and his only passenger.

“I also want to acknowledge the Senn High School community and Edgewater community,” Snelling said. “This was a traumatic incident for not just those directly involved, but those who knew the victims, went to school with the victims or witnessed the aftermath of the shooting.”
