According to Chicago Police Department figures, the number of homicides in the city through the end of February is down more than 20% compared to the same time last year. Shootings have also fallen by 16% this year over last.

“Everyone in our city must be a stakeholder in public safety,” Superintendent Larry Snelling said in a statement. “As our officers work to enforce the law and hold offenders responsible, we must work with our community members to address their concerns and increase their sense of safety.”

There have been 64 homicides recorded through February, according to the CPD, and 292 shooting victims from 253 total shootings.

Last month alone there were 31 homicides — the fewest of any single February since 2019 — and 130 shootings.

Overall transit crime along CTA lines dropped 16% last month compared to February 2023.

The 150 vehicular hijackings recorded so far this year is down 34% compared to the same time in 2023, and the CPD said it has made 302 motor vehicle-related arrests through the first two months of the year.

Police recovered an average of more than 29 firearms each day in February for a total of 844 firearms. The 1,797 total firearms recovered by police so far in 2024 is slightly ahead of last year’s pace.
