Donald J. Trump

Candidate for President

Background

This is former President Donald Trump’s third run for president, but in 2024 his legal woes loom large as he faces 91 criminal felony counts in four separate indictments. In Georgia, there are 13 felony counts against him for trying to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 election. In Florida, Trump faces 40 felony counts for illegally hoarding and mishandling classified documents after he left office. In New York, he faces 34 felony counts for falsifying business records in a hush-money payment scheme involving a porn star. In his most recent civil trial, a jury determined that Trump must pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation. In a separate civil trial in 2023, a jury found Trump defamed Carroll in 2022 regarding his sexual assault of her in a department store in the mid-1990s. That jury ruled Trump must pay Carroll $5 million. He is appealing both cases. On the campaign trail, he touts his part in the end of abortion rights with the Dobbs U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned constitutional protections afforded by the Roe v. Wade opinion.
