More than 5 inches of rain fell across much of the Chicago area last week, the wettest since 2017. The weather posed a test to the area’s stormwater management systems.

In the Albany Park and North Park neighborhoods, city officials credited the Albany Park Stormwater Diversion Tunnel that opened last year with keeping water out of area homes. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s Deep Tunnel and its reservoirs were filled, and officials asked residents to consider skipping showers and delaying washing dishes and clothes until the water subsided. More rain and possible thunderstorms are also in the forecast for several days this week, presenting another possible strain on the system.

Joining “Chicago Tonight” to discuss stormwater management efforts are MWRD Commissioner Debra Shore and Dan Burke, chief engineer of the Chicago Department of Transportation.
