A virtual film festival highlights this year’s Chicago Onscreen Local Film Showcase, which features 19 selections and several in-person, outdoor screenings at local parks and drive-in locations.

The Chicago Park District’s seventh annual series runs from Aug. 29 through Sept. 19, with outdoor screenings Saturday nights at Churchill Field Park (Aug. 29), Ping Tom Memorial Park (Sept. 5) and Jackson Park (Sept. 12), plus drive-in options Sept. 1 and 3. In-person screenings begin at 8 p.m. and follow the same guidelines in place for the Park District’s Moves in the Parks screenings, which continue through Sept. 11, including a requirement that people wear masks or face coverings at park screenings and at drive-in screenings if they must leave their vehicles. Professionals, amateurs and students are among the 20 local filmmakers behind this year’s selections, which include short films, features and documentaries, including Lucas Guy Taylor’s coming-of-age film “Break”; Cai Thomas’ documentary “Douglass,” about the youth-led movement to rename Douglas Park; Sohib Boundaoui’s documentary “Generation One,” about the American-born children of  Arab American immigrants; and Stephanie Jeter’s “Viktory,” about a young foster girl who dreams of becoming a dancer.
