Activists and LGBT hall-of-famers came together for the latest WTTW News ‘Latino Voices’ Community Conversation to reflect on the impact political cartoonist and activist Danny Sotomayor had on the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s. 

Sotomayor fought for treatment and for the acknowledgement of politicians and society as he fought a losing battle to the disease himself.

From 1981 to 1990, there were over 100,000 deaths among people with AIDS reported by local health departments, according to the CDC. Almost one-third of these deaths were reported during 1990.

Sotomayor's story was featured in “The Outrage of Danny Sotomayor” as part of the WTTW series "Chicago Stories."

“Chicago Tonight: Latino Voices” host Hernandez was joined by Alicia Vega, president of Alicia T. Vega Consulting; David Ernesto Munar, president & CEO of Howard Brown Health; and Julio Rodriguez, co-founder and president of the Board of Directors at ALMA Chicago.

All three have been named to the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame.
