Shedd Aquarium’s rescued sea otter pup has doubled in size since arriving in Chicago in late November, which translates to twice as much cuteness.
The still-unnamed pup recently made his public debut after months of acclimating behind the scenes. When staff introduced the little fella to Shedd’s sea otter habitat, he took to his new home like, well, an otter to water.
“It’s a rewarding moment for the team of caretakers and veterinarians who have been supporting the pup since his arrival to see him adapt to another space and tackle more milestones,” Lana Gonzalez, manager of penguins and otters at Shedd Aquarium, said in a statement.
The pup was initially rescued by Alaska SeaLife Center in October 2023 after he was found stranded, with no mother in sight and an adult male sea otter approaching aggressively, according to Shedd. The pup was treated for dehydration, malnourishment and wounds.
Weighing just 10 pounds when he was brought to Shedd, the pup has now bulked up to 20 pounds. He’s been fully weaned from formula, according to Shedd, and is enjoying a diet of high-quality sustainable fish before eventually moving on to crabs and clams.
Grooming is another life skill the pup is learning to master. Socialization is next on the to-do list, with the newcomer still not having met Shedd’s other rescued otters.
The aquarium is advising visitors that the pup won’t be seen on exhibit with other otters yet, but can be glimpsed occasionally as he explores his new habitat.
