Timed to coincide with Women’s Equality Day, established in the U.S. as Aug. 26 to commemorate women’s suffrage, a group of Chicago’s female chefs and restaurateurs are kicking off Women’s Restaurant Week, Aug. 26-31.
The idea grew out of a Zoom call among a number of women who work as Chicago-area chefs, said Sarah Stegner of Prairie Grass Cafe.
“It was smart to band together to face the COVID-19 challenges, learn from each other and encourage customers to support our women-owned restaurants,” Stegner said in a statement.
Women’s Restaurant Week is open to all female restaurateurs, bakers and owners of related businesses in the industry.
In addition to Stegner, the list of participants, which continues to grow, includes Deann Bayless of Frontera Group, Carrie Nahabedian of Brindille, Diana Davila of Mi Tocaya and Dana Cree of Pretty Cool Ice Cream.
While many of the restaurants are still finalizing their offerings for the week, they announced specials include buy-one get-one dipped cones from Vanille Patisserie, a 15% discount from Demera Ethiopian Restaurant and a four-course feast for $45 at Vermilion.
